#955. Lineage of Song: “Johnny B. Goode”

Back to the Future

Michael J. Fox & Coldplay

It’s kind of hard to work on a project like this and not acknowledge one of the biggest moments in one of the most beloved movies of the past fifty years. Later, Coldplay helped Michael J. Fox recreate the magic.

It's one of the greatest songs of the 20th century. Full stop. And I am steadfast on this point: it's a country song. The only reasons it's ever been classified as anything else are that it was written and performed by a Black man and it involved an electric guitar.

I don’t know. I think it was very much of its era. Plenty of music made by black pop stars from that era has plenty of love, this one included. It’s really the dancing that seems inconceivable now. That’s VERY much of its era.
