(7) Days of Zooey - Day 2 (#642.)

Our second stop on the tour of Zooey Deschanel's career is the 2003 movie Elf.  Yeah, I know, you probably think of this as more of a Will Ferrell movie, and with good reason, because it launched his popular movie career, but wait! in a costarring role is none other than Zooey (still not looking anything remotely like her eventual trademark image).  This role is incredibly notable for being the first link in the chain of her singing career, as Zooey sings "Baby It's Cold Outside" to herself.  If you remember nothing else about this movie as far as she goes, or want to watch it for any one reason, that's it.  I can't believe someone didn't try and make her into some kind of musicals star or something after it.  I'm just saying, but she could very easily reunite with Joseph Gordon-Levitt for that kind of thing.  But we'll get back to that...

Like her acting, her singing is mediocre at best.

Is tomorrow the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Let me pre-zing that one: She was only slightly better than Mos Def, who was practically comatose.

Zooey is certainly a lovely actress, and I didn't even notice her in Elf.

Pat, it indeed will be. And it's incredibly important in my personal appreciation for Zooey, as you'll read...

Maurice, it's really not so surprising. She has the wrong hair color!

Great movie and a great voice. I'm not ready to forgive Zooey for her recent Siri commercial but the woman can definitely sing.

I'm with Maurice, I never noticed her in ELF.

She was blonde in Elf! Cute movie. The only movie of hers I didn't like was The Happening, but that wasn't her fault.

I thought she was great in Elf, and I loved this scene! The only bad thing was her hair...Zooey as a blond just does not compute.

Squid, I guess I'll have to research the Great Zooey Siri Controversy, because this is the first I hear of it.

David, Will Ferrell probably did a good job dominating that one.

Diane, I looove The Happening. But I'm a big Shyamalan fan, too. Rest assured, though, that it won't show up this week other than in these comments.

Grace, it's so odd to see her as anything other than what she's been recently!
